Embracing the Shadow & Awaken to Your Soul's Truth ✨

Updated: Jun 25

Understanding how the shadow relates to our inner child & the patterns we create in our lives.

The Shadow - So Vital to Your Spiritual Journey

Our shadow, also known as thewounded inner child,” is the part of us that holds onto unresolved wounds and past experiences. Also as our "Personas". These shadow aspects can influence our behaviour and choices we make in life, often unconsciously...

In order to heal the shadow, it is important for us to understand it on a deeper level and embrace it as the inner wounds we bear before any healing can begin.

The shadow represents the hidden, aspects of ourselves that are left unacknowledged, hidden, avoided, feared or rejected.  They have been shaped by our past traumas, ancestral patterns, societal conditioning and family dynamics we’ve encountered growing up.

Most of these patterns and limiting beliefs are set by the time we’ve reached the age of seven (7) and we carry them with us, repeating them (same scenarios but with different people and situations) and spending our lives looking at life through this filtered lens of illusions and untruths

As a result, they become the personas or masks we wear just so we can cope in our daily lives and are unconsciously played out in various patterns, habits, old stories and limiting beliefs.

  • Anger and Resentment:  Difficulty letting go of past hurts.

  • Sadness and Depression:  Persistent feelings of loneliness or hopelessness.

  • Guilt and Shame:  Self-criticism and negative self-talk.

Behavioural Manifestations:

  • People-Pleasing: Difficulty saying no and setting boundaries.

  • Control Issues: Need to micromanage or dominate situations.

  • Avoidance Behaviours: Procrastination, substance abuse, or unhealthy relationships.

  • Codependency: Over-reliance on others for validation and support.

Mental Manifestations:

  • Limiting Beliefs: Negative self-talk and self-doubt.

  • Perfectionism: Unrealistic expecations and fear of failure.

  • Black-and-White Thinking: Inability to see shades of gray; limited ways of thinking or  thinking “outside-the-box”.

  • Negative self-talk.

Journalling Prompts

What are some of the common ways the shadow aspects (your personas manifested as patterns, old stories, limiting beliefs etc.) manifest for you in your daily life? Do you recognize any of these in yourself or even others?

By becoming aware of these patterns in yourself and then taking small action steps toward healing the underlying wounds behind them, we can break free and heal from unhealthy patterns and live a more authentic and fulfilling life.  Even the "awareness" of them can bring on instant healing! Yes!

Becoming Aware of Your Personas Involves Paying Attention to Your Thoughts, Emotions and Behaviours.

Common signs to watch for:

  • Recurring Patterns: Notice recurring themes in your relationships, work, or personal life.

  • Strong Emotional Reactions: Pay attention to intense emotions, such as anger, fear, or jealousy. These are the "triggers" of the charged emotions. Read my post called, "Triggers are Treasures."

  • Self-Sabotaging Behaviours: Identify actions that hinder your progress or happiness: This includes procrastination, and distractions too!

Journalling Prompt: What self-sabotaging behaviours are holding me back and stopping me from moving forward?

List them and watch yourself become aware of them every time it happens! This is a great first step in healing the shadow self and the inner wounded child.

  • Negative Self-Talk: Listen to your inner critic and challenge its negative messages.

  • People-Pleasing or Controlling Tendencies: Observe how you interact with others and identify any patterns of co-dependency or dominance.

A Practical Action Step - Pause and Reflect

When you take a step back and reflect on your reactions, you can begin to identify the underlying Shadow personas that are making themselves known - all because you are now aware of the; “inner wounded child”, who is ready and willing to be healed and integrated back into wholeness once again.

This awareness is the first step towards healing and transformation - and often healing can happen just by shining a light on the darkness; the layers of burdens, old habits, beliefs, stories and more, you’ve been carrying around with you for awhile, and often for years!

When you find yourself in a triggering situation - take a moment to pause, breathe and observe your thoughts and emotions - BE the 'sacred witness' to them in the present moment with compassion and without judgement.

Journalling Prompts - Ask yourself these additional prompts:

  • What emotions am I feeling right now?

  • What thoughts are running through my mind?

  • How might my past experiences be influencing my current reaction?

These questions make great prompts where you can journal the insights that come up for you as you ask them.

Journalling: A Life-Changing Practice, Cultivated By Consistency

If you haven’t journaled before, be open to trying it. Or, if you’ve journaled in the past and couldn’t stick with it, keep an open mind and try it again. So many lightbulb moments reveal themselves to you through journalling!

Sometimes, it just takes a little nudge and encouragement from someone else to motivate you - that would be me... wink, wink 😉.
